Do certain industries have to use petroleum, or can they switch over fully to renewable energy as well?

I came across a position today where the person asserted that certain industries that require heavy machinery are dependent on petroleum, and that battery technology wouldn’t be sufficient for their use. How true is this? And if it’s true, what percentage of industry would rely, perhaps indefini
